North America loves its pickup trucks. They're big, powerful, and really fit the bill for what a true workhorse of a vehicle should be. Fortunately, there's no shortage of options to choose from when walking onto a dealer lot in any suburban town, including either of General Motors' own sub-brands. But what pickup truck do you buy when you value luxury over play, or the highway over the unpaved trail? For your consideration today is the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. Leaning more toward luxury than ruggedness is a tall order in a market that caters to sheer ability. But nevertheless, the Sierra 1500 Denali mostly delivers.

The Denali is GMC's black-tie answer to the Sierra lineup. The flagship offering meant to separate play from drudgery, despite still being capable of hard work, and all while offering life's little luxuries a driver didn't necessarily know that they needed until now. Informally, GMC's always considered itself the "boss' truck," and the Denali is supposed to be the ultimate expression of that ethos.

It is insanely comfortable when driving on a straightaway. Mild bumps in the pavement are gobbled up by the Sierra's suspension with ease, almost unnoticeable, while smooth roads are more like sailing on a calm sea—collected, cushioned, and congenial. And if you're in for the long haul, optional safety features like adaptive cruise and lane-keep assist make the drive a bit more laid back.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto pair perfectly with the Denali's wireless phone charger on the center console. The Bose sound system with dealer-installed kicker subwoofer sounds pretty great too.

Sporty SUVs are all the rage, and it seems like a simple formula. Take your bread and butter SUV, pop in a bigger engine, tune it to make more power, stiffen the dampers, add a body kit, and garnish it with some fancy badges. As a matter of fact, put those badges everywhere. Door sills, pedals, I mean everywhere. It seems easy enough, no? But pulling it off and striking that fine line between domestic comfort and spirited driving takes some engineering magic.

The latest to try their hand is the Ford Explorer ST. Want to blend in with the cops? This is your SUV. Want to outrun the cops? Grab the ST. It follows the formula to the tee. Ford took their 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, plopped it into the Explorer, and tuned it to produce 35 more horsepower and 35 more lb-ft of torque for a grand total of 400 hp and 415 lb-ft, enough to launch it from 0-100 km/h in around five seconds. The dampers have been stiffened to reduce body roll. It gets a more aggressive body kit. And yes, ST badges are everywhere.

Ford fits the ST with the same drive modes as other Explorer models, including Eco, Normal, Sport, Slippery, Trail, Deep Snow/Sand and Tow/Haul. Sport mode is where I spend most of my time while driving the ST, which speeds up the transmission's already quick gear changes, and improves throttle tip-in. Sport mode adds a bit of weight to the steering's action, too, and it amplifies the engine noise being pumped into the cabin.

Every Explorer comes with Ford's Co-Pilot 360 driver-assistance tech, which includes blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. The ST goes one step further, adding the Assist Plus package, which gets you adaptive cruise control with lane-centering tech and evasive steering assist.

Toyota redesigned its popular RAV4 just last year. This new model gained a variety of improvements such as a more powerful engine, more safety features and bolder styling. These changes have no doubt bolstered the RAV4's popularity, and it continues to be one of the best-selling vehicles in America.

Certainly, it has some appealing qualities. The RAV4 is roomy inside and has plenty of space for rear passengers and cargo. It also comes standard with an array of advanced driver safety aids such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. For 2020, Toyota has also added Android Auto smartphone integration. There really seems to be a RAV4 to fit any need and budget, but the XLE Premium trim strikes a good balance between features and price. Its power liftgate, in particular, is a worthwhile upgrade alone.

The XLE adds the LE’s optional safety features as well as dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, proximity keyless entry, four more USB ports, alloy wheels, and fog lights. You may find some models with a moonroof, a power liftgate, heated front seats, or an 8-inch touch screen.

The XLE Premium comes with a power liftgate, a moonroof, SofTex synthetic leather upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2020 Toyota RAV4 the highest rating of Good in all six crash test categories. Its headlights received the second-lowest rating of Marginal for forward visibility.

The IIHS uses a different scale for grading collision avoidance features. It gave this Toyota the highest rating of Superior for its standard front crash prevention systems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the RAV4 an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, with five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests.
